When Good Poker Runs Bad

Saturday, April 25th, 2009 | Beginner Lesson

We have all been at a dry spell of wining when we are playing poker, and when I talk about playing poker I mean playing good poker.  AA constantly gets cracked, sets losing to full house and top pair is never enough.  It gets you to the point where you want to give up or cry, well don’t.

Many of the players taking a break is the best option.  Take that time off to look over your hand history of games played and look for mistakes and leaks in your game.  Find those leaks in your game where you missed on a big pot or when you lost a big pot by letting someone draw out on you, question your own plays then have others look at it too.  Don’t be shy about learning.

If taking a break is not an option I personally suggest taking a break from what your doing and do something else.  If your a NL Holdem tournament player, move over to the Omaha or other poker variant cash tables.  The more you learn about other poker games will help you with all poker games.

The drastic change is often what the mind needs.  Its easy to forgive but hard to forget so change is good because it actually confuses the brain on what got you down in the first place.
The learning of a new game will consume the mind and tricking it.

Personally I have to credit the run of bad luck to my success in the different games I do play.

If we all sat here and dwelled upon the bad beats and posted our suckout hands over and over the game of poker would be so annoying for new players to want to get involved and we need more suckers at the tables.
Take a break, learn a new game and you too can start being the shark.

good advice AJ. I took a mini break a few months back,i re-read your tutorials and they help alot. I know 2 of my biggest poker mistakes and one I have improved upon as I am cashing out more regularly. The other one I am still trying to get a handle on. I can be a stubborn sob lol..

I don’t want to come into the $$ every tourney I play.( It would be nice) but I at least want to finish better than the last tourney of the same caliber I played.I am doing that but I am such a newbie fish compared to a lot of poker peeps with years in aka ” poker seniority” that I got to pay my dues!!!
So with that said… C ya on the tables.. and may good fortune be in the cards..

Great advice.

I never would have thought to just play a different kind of poker to work my way through a dry spell.
Learning a new game would bring back some excitement, and make it feel fresh and fun again.

Like twinsie, when I was on a losing streak I went back over the lessons that you wrote and went back to square one. It worked for me.
Sometimes getting back to basics is a good thing, much like learning a new game, your back at the beginning.

Great blog entry :)
