Beating Rake Omaha Hi/Lo

Sunday, June 14th, 2009 | Intermediate Lesson | 2 Comments

Players will often say that Omaha Hi / Lo for online poker is a tough game to play because the amount of split pots will have you losing money in the long run because of rake.  How this is correct is identified by how bad the player really is, either by playing bad cards or not having the courage to play a big pot.

Since we are talking about Rake, we are talking about the cash table
playing Omaha Hi/Lo (from this point we will call it Omaha 8b)

There are TWO fundamental rules to beating the rake in Omaha 8b…. › Continue reading

Fantasy Limit Omaha

Saturday, June 13th, 2009 | Tournaments | 3 Comments

I qualified for this $1000 Freeroll on FullTilt in a Fantasy Poker League.

With Freddy Deeb and Eli Elezra cashing in the Omaha 8b gave me enough points to be given a ticket to the Limit Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better (8b) last night.

Usually a limit poker game does take a long time and a lot of energy to play, with this being Omaha and more players see flops I decided I was going to take the time and put the focus into this game. It is also good practice for my HORSE game where I seem to excel at Omaha and the hi/lo variants.  So after the first couple hands I realized there was many sit outs, hmmm

Skill vs Luck In Omaha

Sunday, May 24th, 2009 | Tournaments | 1 Comment

Omaha Hi/Lo Poker Tournament with only 10 players registered when we started this game tonight on Players Cardroom, we ended up with 15 after the late registration.  I did an instant addon when I sat down, surprised because I was the only one.

Its Early I’ll Play Nice
Smooth start as I put fear into my opponents minds with my big stack ; )
Building up chips at a rounders pace and when the blinds go to 50/100 I started to see a few more flops, specially after taking notes on how they are playing for lows and other draws, mostly the flopped flush.  I got my chips in with a player that liked to draw when I flopped trips and let out my fish line and he did bite.  He pushed on the turn and I called, the pot was built up on the re-raise flop. I scored a 5k pot and moved into 2nd place.

Just Before Break Suxs
About 10 mins till break and I get slapped around a bit when in 3 hands I either chopped or got out drawn on by short stack desperation moves.  Was kinda sick because I had flopped 2 pair on those three hands, and as I have said before I hate flopping two pair.   With my work cut out for me now it was time to put on my steel toe donkey kicking boots.  I didn’t do an addon.

Don’t Stop Now It Feels Goooood
Ohhhh I get a suck out on the riva when I snagged the flush for a chop pot.
I didn’t stop there with the moves when I pushed a very aggressive call train off with a river bluff to take down a much needed pot.  Then while holding the nut low with 3 players to the river I fired out a pot size bet and scooped that down with out a caller..  and people say don’t bet for the low as your just gonna chop, well they need to call first.

In The Money When
** Dealing Turn ** [ 3s ]
FOOSERBACK: bets [$ 1568]
I_BEE_N calls [$ 1568]
Assistanc3 calls [$ 1568]
** Dealing River ** [ Qs ]
I_BEE_N checks
Assistanc3 checks
FOOSERBACK shows [ 9h, 5d, 6d, 6h ]a straight, six high
I_BEE_N shows [ Ac, 5c, Jc, 7d ]a straight, five high
Assistanc3 shows [ 6s, 2c, 7s, Ad ]a flush, queen high
Assistanc3 wins high with a flush, queen high [ Qs, 7s, 6s, 3s, 2s ]
I_BEE_N wins  low with 5, 4, 3, 2, A [ Ac, 5c, 4d, 3s, 2s ]

Notice the double check down?  Guess it didn’t make that much of a difference tho as I cashed out in 3rd to _Bee_ who went on to win this Omaha Tournament.

PL Omaha is My Game

Monday, April 13th, 2009 | Tournaments | 1 Comment

While sitting at a PL Holdem Cash table waiting for some A3 members to join me for a nightly ring session
on Players Cardroom I decided to get back to the game I truly enjoy.  PL Omaha!!

It was a mere $1 BuyIn with 20 entrants, so a small field for the small buyin.

Started off great chipping up till I got a little to aggressive on the final with trip tens that I was out kicked.  I knew after the re-raise that thinking twice or maybe a little bit longer could have saved me some chips.  At that point I was in the top 5 and shipped them chips and became a short stack.

Making the Move

It was time to start pushing the chips

Js.gifJc.gif
Tc.gif8c.gif
As.gifKs.gifAh.gif7h.gif
Th.gifJh.gifJs.gif8s.gif
$6741 $8541 $13882 $18262 $28524

So for all those that have read the Starting Hands Omaha lesson can see from the above hands what combination you should be looking for where all four cards play well together.
Notice the pattern other then wow get aces enough times?  Double suited and a pocket pair.

Reading the Flop Omaha

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009 | Advanced Lesson | No Comments

After the pre flop round of betting, the flop in Omaha is the next most important part to learn because it is usually where the weaker poker player loses money. Reading the Flop to understand it is much like Texas Holdem, knowing that there are more draws is what makes it harder to master. Once you know of what hands are easy to let go and which have value to continue is when you will start to consistently profit playing Omaha.

Got the Balls or the Nuts
Omaha is a drawing game, because of the 4 starting hole cards, so the flops can give players straight and flush draws a lot easier. Reading the Flop in Omaha is all about drawing to the nuts,
but that does not mean do not play unless you have the nut hand, but do not get out played playing Drawing with the 2nd Best hand, specially in pot limit where it can be a little easier to disguise the best hand. Know your drawing hands.

Give or Go
From the Omaha Starting Hands chart, if we are playing the top 4 group hands or the “wrap hands” reading the flop makes life playing poker a lot more simplistic. You either have a hand, could make a hand or have nothing at all. How to play the flop in Omaha is key to winning a big pot or losing a small pot, but first you have to learn how to read it.

Do I Have It
The first thing you should do when you look at the community cards is identify the best possible hands to win that board. Is there already a made straight is the first thing I am looking for, then the flush draw; is the board double suited. You must understand the texture of the board in relation to your hand before you can continue playing out the hand.

Omaha Hi Lo So Easy

Friday, January 16th, 2009 | Cash Table | 2 Comments

After the League Game last night I made a blog about it of course, and finished the results post and updated the Leader Board.  Good friend Corey was already playing at a cash table so I hit the waiting list.  Wow that is something I could never do, honestly I am patient when it comes to cards, but waiting for a seat? No way.

So I looked over the Omaha ring tables, and seen a short stack sitting all alone at a Hi Lo game, so I went there just to take their chips and hopefully my seat would be ready by then.  First 2 hands in, I am re raising, and get called a “Donkey” and an “Idiot”…no surprise, not really news worthy.  Maybe send it off to Fox and they can count the times people call me a donkey?

Some new players came down to sit.  I busted most of them.
There is a couple images attached, with some wins.
Clearly beating the rake once again.
