Satellite $50,000 GTD

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 | Tournaments | 7 Comments

Went on to Full Tilt and looked around for a bit as I was rested from my nap earlier in the day trying to find a decent game to get into, there was plenty but I opted for a 200 FTPoint satellite to the $50,000 next weekend.  I didn’t have anything on my schedule so trying to fill-er-up.

It had late registration open and a number of players had already been railed, when I got in there was 32 remaining with 10 gone.  The tournament finished with 51 entrants and top 10 got an entry and 11th got there 200 points back. › Continue reading

Making a Risky Move

Monday, April 13th, 2009 | Tournaments | 1 Comment

Sometimes making the risky move doesn’t always look good, but then again that is why it is risky in the first place.  K6 from late position I was trying to make the steal after folding on the button.  Does the button even matter in a satellite?

$10,000 GTD ticket was up for grabs in the $4 BuyIn on Players Cardroom
Rebuy and Addon were available….

I actually bought into this game with 4 minutes to break, late registration into an already depleted field with only a few larger stacks spanned out.  I doubled up on my first hand so my addon option to get more chips wasn’t there.  Saved myself $4.  Hey I don’t mind using coupons either.  A penny not spent now can always be spent later ; )

At break I added on and not long after coming back from break we are final table.
Top 5 get a ticket and I was gonna steal with my T7o from the button but decided that might look to obvious and since I have played maybe 5 hands I could probably get more credit the next hand.

Holding K6o its folded to me and I make the push and called by AQo in SB.

The move pays off as I get my ticket and rush to register for the April 19th $10,000 Tournament.

$4k Satellite Attempt

Saturday, March 14th, 2009 | Tournaments | 2 Comments

Another satellite attempt to the daily $4000 on Players Cardroom
This was freaking so close to bubbling, not just once but 4 different times.

These are super satellites where 15 get tickets, usually about 50 enter

Going into break a had a solid position, did an addon so $4 total
The crazy part was the bubble, I blinded down so much and short stacks kept hitting I had to wait it out.  Waited so long I was all in on the Big Blind.  I caught my hand to give me another orbit.

It was just enough to hold on.  5-6 hands later the antes and fast blinds
caught up to everyone and those that at first thought were safe un till I went out were no longer.
Their ticket was now in jeopardy and someone had to fall.

It was not me :)

Mar14th Satellite to the $4000

Mar14th Satellite to the $4000

I won’t be entering in today’s $4000 as I am playing a $800 GTD

Get Your Ticket

Saturday, November 29th, 2008 | Tournaments | 2 Comments

I got mine.
I started the morning in a $3 buyin to the $5k on Players Cardroom, was playing some really good poker till I got donked on the river.  I would have to safely say yes to donk, because the other player even say he put me on a pair of 7’s or 10’s.  The tens would have gave me trips and he still called with a pair of jacks….I did have Kings, but there was a jack on the river….

I wanted to continue playing since I still was feeling good about my game, so I headed out for a smoke and toped up on my 1L cup of coffee.  When I came back there was a $6 tournament to the $10k, already started, I got in.  Seriously people how does anyone pass up these +EV opportunities?
It is much like PokerPoint Qualifier on PCR.

Game On
It’s early game, first few hands I wanted to get a feel for the players simply cause it is a satellite and some players do play really bad, and some times players play really tight.  I got in with good hands so it worked out to find info, the cards didn’t produce anything other then giving me the image of a weak limper.

I was mixing it picking up some small pots, looking a little foolish at times, on purpose of course, no really its true…omg don’t say that your gonna make me cry “mommy”…

With the blinds at 50/100 I got dealt… well … I flopped the full house, and I checked it down to the river, while I knew the other player involved in the hand was tight, I had to check it to the river, where she hits the Jack for the straight, and I knock out a player.

The very next hand, I almost flopped a royal flush………
I did end up taken another player out.

When we got down to three players I had a feeling who I would be heads up with, 1 of the players just went on tilt after getting their aces cracked, but used that tilt to put on pressure and actually got them back in the game.  He ended up getting his chips back and sent us into heads up…
here were the chips stacks at that point.
Seat 2: THANGCO ( 6865 )
Seat 7: Assistanc3 ( 3635 )

It was a tought battle, we played nearly 50 hands in heads up.
Both with truly different styles as well.  There were a few times were I trapped him and played it just perfect only to get the dubious river card.  “oh why that card?”  Assistanc3 shouted at the freaking monitor only to realize he has 5, 4, 3, 2, ok I call…GRRRRRRRRRR

When the blinds went up to 200/400 it was done in 3 hands, it was all about who would get the best all in hand to hold up..much to the crowds pleasure of watching, we seen a flop.  I hit the flop, but he came out betting.  We seen the turn, I missed the turn, and again checked… he pushes all in, I call and my KQ, top pair holds up to his K2.

Tournament Variants

Thursday, August 14th, 2008 | Tournament Lesson | No Comments

Poker Tournament Variation Structures

Most poker tournaments play with the same structure of blinds and chips. Depending on the site you play at. Some start with 1500 starting chips, others maybe 2000, I’ve even seen starting stacks at 1000, ouch. Blinds are usually wide spread the same, usually 8 minutes, but again it veries on the site/network.

Freezeout Tournaments
These are your typical tournaments you see and most people play. It is uniform to poker and the variants branch off the freezout structure. You buyin, and if you lose your chips your out. Usually the top 10% is paid out.

Satellite Tournaments
Satellites are known as the little guy getting into the big game. You buyin hoping to win, like a winner take all, and what you win is a ticket to a bigger buyin game. In a typical tournament the prize pool is equal to the tickets. So if you have winning ticket worth $50 and there is $100 in the prize pool, generally 2 tickets are paid out.

Turbo Tournaments
Turbo’s usually have a 5 minute blind structure, some sites have it as 2 minutes. Generally the action in these tournaments are all in pre flop. These tournaments you really need some luck on your side, either by getting good cards early or sucking out.

Deep Stack Tournaments
My personal favorite. Deep Stacks give you more starting chips. Giving you more play for your money. Not only that, it gives you the chance to actually make “plays” and “moves” at the table. For online poker, the Deep Stack tournament gives you the bigger buyin feel at the lower buyin tournament. There are Deep Stack tournaments at higher levels too, which is where you will find better poker.

Re-Buy and Add-On Tournaments
Lets start with the prize pool after registration is closed. On the tournaments the prize pool is what it is. In the Re-Buy and Add-On Tournaments it never stays that way. If you go broke or go below starting stack you have the option to Re Buy back in. The Add-On comes after a certain time period, usually first break. Here you can buy some more chips on top of what you already have.

Winner Take All Tournament
You buyin, if you win… you take down the entire prize pool. $cha ching$

Double Thru tournaments
Normally these are 10 player Sit N Go’s. Half the players in the field will double their buyin back, the other half walk away empty. Personally I like these tournaments while I multi table.

Bounty Tournaments
In a Bounty tournament, a percentage of the prize pool will be taken to put a bounty on the heads of players. The overall prize payout structure remains the same, but the extra value is found as you knock out other players and receive a cash prize for every elimination
